Since the late 1970s, advances in construction methods and materials have caused homes to become more tightly sealed. Sealed homes save energy but at a cost to our health. Our tightly sealed, energy-efficient dwellings are full of building materials and consumer goods that are made of chemicals or constructed through a chemical process that off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). These VOC’s continue to off-gas at room temperature for five to seven years or more.
Unknowingly Americans are living in and raising our children in a toxic soup of chemicals. Housing is constructed at a record pace with no thought to proper air distribution and HVAC design. The same stale air is being recirculated, while we bring in various types of pollutants from the outside without adequately filtering it.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and governments around the world track pollution. The unit of measurement they use to track these pollutants is referred to as particle matter, or PM. The size of the particle matter units is assigned a number in microns. They recognize and count two categories of pollutants; PM10.0 and PM2.5 microns. Humans have natural defenses for PM10.0 and PM2.5. These sizes cause many types of health issues and diseases. Allergies, asthma, sinus infections, and many upper respiratory are from inhaling PM10.0 and PM2.5.
It could be as many as 6 or 7 years before the WHO, world governments or our industry are talking about the most serious of PM problems: the PM1.0 micron size particles. PM1.0 are so small that they bypass the natural human defenses, go directly into the lungs, and enter the bloodstream. Recent studies have connected PM1.0 to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, and a host of other diseases. Even weight gain has been linked to PM1.0 due to increased lethargy, illness, and other energy-sucking maladies.
Over the last year, we have tested hundreds of homes with nearly 90% of them showing pollutants well into the dangerous level. Indoor pollutants come from many different household items like cleaning products, air fresheners, personal care products, nail polish remover, etc. Remember an odor, even if pleasant, is a VOC, which converts at room temperature into a chemical.

The current industry-standard design of HVAC systems creates negative pressure in our homes, which pulls outdoor toxins into our homes creating a toxic soup of indoor and outdoor chemicals. Scientists know very little of what these chemicals do to our bodies once combined. These pollutants pass directly through the very best filters and air purifiers currently available on the market.
